What is the chrysalis?
A chrysalis is like a cocoon but it is only for butterflies. A cocoon is for moths. The larva turns into a chrysalis or pupa during metamorphosis. Inside the chrysalis, the larva eats its own tissue and turns into a soupy liquid until it becomes a butterfly. Then the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. When the monarch butterfly is a larva or caterpillar it is a very hungry eater. The caterpillar grows so fast that it then turns into a chrysalis. When it outgrows its skin or hard case, an adult butterfly splits the case. Watch this video to see how this amazing process happens.
